H1 Verification Methods
The H1 Energy Efficiency requirements provide two different compliance pathways – Calculation and Modelling methods – allowing designers to choose the approach that best suits their project.
Each method offers a different level of flexibility, from meeting prescribed insulation values through to balancing thermal performance across the entire building to achieve compliance and energy efficiency goals.
As of November 2025, the Schedule Method has been removed from the Building Code and is no longer an acceptable solution or verification method for H1 Energy Efficiency. Designers have a 12-month transition period, ending November 2026, to fully adopt the changes by that date. The change aims to improve clarity, flexibility, and affordability for designers, builders, and homeowners.
Calculation Method
The Calculation Method compares your proposed building to a reference building that meets the minimum H1 requirements. As long as the overall building performs as well as or better than the reference building, insulation levels can be adjusted between different building elements. For example, higher insulation in one area can offset lower insulation in another.
Key limitations:
- Glazing must not exceed 40% of the total wall area.
- Roof, wall and floor R-values must be at least 50% of the corresponding reference building R-values.
Modelling Method
The Modelling Method is used to assess the energy performance of a proposed building by using a simulation of the building to predict its space heating loads and cooling loads. This is compared with the space heating and cooling loads of a reference building that is the same shape, dimensions, and orientation as the proposed building, but has building elements with construction R-Values from H1/AS1. The Modelling Method requires highly detailed calculations that require certified software.
