Fast, Tailored H1 Calculations
We produce H1 Calculations in-house quickly and accurately, with just a full set of consent-ready plans. By incorporating your preferred solutions or restrictions, we tailor the calculation to your project, enhancing overall compliance outcomes.
This can include;
- The level of thermal comfort your client wants to achieve (good-better-best)
- Under-slab insulation
- Glazing specifications
- Polyester or Glasswool insulation
We typically help reduce total compliance costs by focusing on less expensive solutions, such as limiting the under-slab insulation and glazing, as insulation is comparatively cheap. This approach enables you to meet requirements cost-effectively. Our H1 Calculations are typically ready within 5-7 days, and we offer expedited service if necessary.
Verification Method
The Calculation and Modelling methods are the two ways to comply with Building Code insulation requirements and are more flexible and adaptable to suit each new home.
As of November 2025, the Schedule Method has been removed from the Building Code and is no longer an acceptable solution or verification method for H1 Energy Efficiency. Designers have a 12-month transition period, ending November 2026, to fully adopt the changes by that date. The change aims to improve clarity, flexibility, and affordability for designers, builders, and homeowners.
Calculation Method
The calculation method compares a proposed building with a reference building (to which the minimum construction R-Values of each building element are applied). The entire building must perform at least as well as the reference building, however, the insulation level of any individual building element can be above or below that of the reference building. Higher insulation in one element can be used to compensate for lower insulation in another.
There are some limitations with the calculation method:
- The calculation method can only be used when glazing accounts for 40% or less of the total wall area.
- The construction R-Value for roofs, walls and floors in the proposed building must be at least 50% of the construction R-Value of the corresponding building element in the reference building.
Modelling Method
The Modelling Method is used to assess the energy performance of a proposed building by using a simulation of the building to predict its space heating loads and cooling loads. This is compared with the space heating and cooling loads of a reference building that is the same shape, dimensions, and orientation as the proposed building, but has building elements with construction R-Values from H1/AS1. The Modelling Method requires highly detailed calculations that require certified software.
